Alma da Agua: A Fluid Water and Space Initiative is an interdisciplinary art-in-space collaboration between Richard Clar of Art Technologies and Dinis Ribeiro of Companhia Espacial Portuguesa, Lda., begins with the gathering of water samples from the eight Portuguese-speaking countries: Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guiné-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, and East Timor. The individual water samples, carried into space aboard a Brazilian sounding rocket in a liquid mixing apparatus, will be exposed to low-gravity in order to mix the waters in a highly symbolic “new way” and in a “different environment.” The project addresses metaphorically the possibility of greater technical unification and deeper collaboration of Portuguese speaking countries and celebrates their common bond of language, thus helping to create a greater awareness to consolidate collaborative efforts.
